Why EV owners protect their cars early

Paint that chips easily. Rock chips on the hood and bumper in the first months of ownership are a common topic in Tesla owner forums. Paint hardness varies by manufacturer and color, so it's worth looking at your own front end after a few highway trips.

Low, wide front ends. EVs don't need a radiator grille, so the front of the car is one smooth painted surface. There's more paint facing the road and nothing to break up the impacts.

Instant torque and heavy weight. EVs are heavy and accelerate hard, which means more debris coming off the tires and hitting the lower panels.

Repairs take time. Paint and body repairs on EVs can mean waiting for approved shops and parts.

EV models

Tesla Model Y and Model 3

Tesla's best selling models. Common packages are full front PPF, or full body for owners who plan to keep the car. Ceramic tint is also very common on these cars because of the large amount of glass.

Tesla Model S and Model X

Larger, more expensive cars where full body PPF is often chosen. The Model X falcon doors and large windshield call for an installer who knows the car.

Tesla Cybertruck

The Cybertruck has no paint at all. The body is bare stainless steel. That doesn't mean it can't get marked: scratches, scuffs and contamination show on bare steel and can't be polished out the way paint can. Clear or matte PPF protects the steel, and color wraps are popular too.

Rivian, Ford Mustang Mach-E, Chevy and others

Rivian R1S and R1T, Mustang Mach-E, F-150 Lightning, Chevy Equinox EV and Blazer EV, Hyundai Ioniq and Kia EV models all benefit from the same approach: protect the front end first, then decide on the rest.

A common EV protection plan

You don't have to do everything at once, but this order works well:

  1. PPF on the front end, or full body. Ideally before the car racks up highway miles.
  2. Ceramic window tint. Keeps the cabin cooler, so the AC uses less battery. Remember Michigan law only allows film on the top 4 inches of the front side windows and windshield.
  3. Ceramic coating on top of the film and on the rest of the paint. Makes washing easier.

Doing all three in one visit means the car is off the road only once.

Tint on EVs

EVs have a lot of glass, and many have large glass roofs. A cooler cabin means the AC works less, which helps range on hot days. Ceramic film has no metal, so it won't interfere with phone keys, GPS or the car's connectivity.

Tesla & EV PPF FAQ

Is Tesla paint really that soft?

Many owners report chips early, and Tesla paint is a frequent topic in owner forums. Regardless of brand, the front of any car at highway speed takes hits, and PPF is the most effective way to stop the damage.

Should I get PPF before or after delivery inspection?

After you've inspected the car for paint defects and had any warranty issues fixed. Film should go on paint that's in the condition you want to keep.

Can you wrap a Cybertruck?

Yes. Color wraps and clear or matte PPF are both common on the Cybertruck's stainless body.

Does PPF affect the cameras and sensors?

Film is kept clear of camera lenses, and installers trim around sensors as needed.

How much does PPF cost on a Tesla?

It depends on the model and coverage. See our PPF cost page for typical Michigan ranges, and call for a quote.
