What matte PPF is
Matte PPF is paint protection film with a satin topcoat instead of a gloss one. Underneath, it's the same thermoplastic urethane film used in clear gloss PPF, with the same thickness and the same self-healing properties on most current products. The difference is what you see: light scatters off the surface instead of reflecting, so the paint looks satin.
"Stealth" is the name some manufacturers use for their matte film. XPEL Stealth is one of the best known, and other major film brands make their own versions.
Two reasons people choose matte PPF
Changing the look of gloss paint
Put matte film on a black car and it becomes satin black. On white, gray, blue or red, the color stays the same but the finish changes completely. It changes a car's look without a wrap, and unlike a wrap, you also get rock chip protection.
If you change your mind later, the film comes off and the original gloss paint is still there.
Protecting factory matte paint
Several manufacturers sell cars with factory matte paint. Matte paint can't be polished like gloss paint. Polishing makes it shiny in spots, so scratches and chips are very hard to fix, and repainting a matte panel to match is difficult and expensive.
Matte PPF is one of the best ways to protect it. It keeps the matte look and takes the damage instead of the paint.
Full body or partial
Matte film usually goes on the whole car. If only part of the car is covered, the difference between satin and gloss panels is obvious. Full body is the standard choice for a color change effect.
On factory matte paint, partial coverage is possible because the film and paint have a similar finish, but the film's satin level and the paint's satin level may not match exactly. It's worth seeing a sample on your car.
Caring for matte PPF
Matte surfaces need different care from gloss:
- No wax, polish or glaze. These fill in the texture and leave shiny, blotchy spots.
- Use matte-safe soap. Many regular car soaps include gloss enhancers.
- Hand wash. Brush car washes can burnish the surface and create shiny streaks.
- Clean spills fast. Bird droppings, bugs and fuel are easier to remove before they sit.
- Matte-specific coatings exist. A coating made for matte film can make washing easier without adding gloss.
The good news is that the self-healing topcoat works on matte film too, so light marks from washing tend to disappear with heat.
Matte PPF vs matte wrap
| Matte PPF | Matte vinyl wrap | |
|---|---|---|
| Changes the finish | Yes | Yes |
| Changes the color | No, keeps the paint color | Yes |
| Rock chip protection | Yes | Limited |
| Self-healing | Yes, on most films | No |
| Typical cost | Higher | Lower |
If you like your car's color and want satin plus protection, matte PPF is the better choice. If you want a different color, a wrap is the way to go.
Matte PPF FAQ
Does matte PPF cost more than gloss PPF?
Usually, yes. Exact pricing depends on the film and the car. Call for a quote.
Can you put matte PPF on just the hood?
You can, but on gloss paint the hood will look different from the rest of the car. That's sometimes the look people want, but most choose full body.
Will matte PPF turn shiny over time?
Using wax, polish or the wrong soap can make it shiny in spots. With the right care, the finish stays even.
Can matte PPF be removed?
Yes. On healthy factory paint, it can be removed and the original finish is still underneath.
How long does matte PPF last?
That depends on the film and the manufacturer's warranty terms. Ask which film is being used and what its warranty covers.
