Quick reference

Service Typical wait before the first wash What to avoid early on
Paint protection film A few days Pressure washing film edges
Window tint Exterior: no wait. Interior glass: about a week Rolling windows down, cleaning inside glass
Ceramic coating About a week before using soap Rain and water in the first day if possible
Vinyl wrap A few days Pressure washing edges, brush car washes

Paint protection film

Film needs a few days to settle against the paint. Small moisture pockets are normal in that time. Washing too early, especially with a pressure washer near the edges, can lift them.

After that, wash normally. Hand washing is best. Keep a pressure washer nozzle moving and away from film edges. A ceramic coating on top makes PPF easier to clean.

Window tint

Tint is on the inside of the glass, so you can wash the outside of the car right away. The inside is a different story. Leave the inside glass alone for about a week, longer in cold weather, while the film cures. Keep the windows rolled up during that time too.

When you do clean the inside, use a soft cloth and an ammonia-free cleaner.

Ceramic coating

Coatings need time to cure. The first day matters most: if you can keep the car dry and garaged, do. Most products ask you to wait about a week before washing with soap. Exact times depend on the coating, so follow the product's instructions.

Once it's cured, use pH neutral car soap. Harsh degreasers and some touchless wash chemicals wear coatings down faster.

Vinyl wrap

Wraps need a few days for the adhesive to settle, especially around edges and seams. After that, hand washing is ideal. Avoid brush car washes, which can scratch vinyl and catch edges. Matte and satin wraps need soap without gloss enhancers, and never wax.

What about automatic car washes?

Winter washing

In a Michigan winter, washing regularly matters more than usual. Salt sitting on paint, film or vinyl isn't good for any of them. Rinse the lower panels and the underside whenever the roads have been heavily salted for a while, even if you can't do a full wash.
