For every appointment
- Empty the car. Remove personal items, car seats and anything in the door pockets and trunk. Installers need clear access to windows, doors and panels.
- Confirm the details. Coverage, film or product, shade for tint, and price should all be clear before work starts.
- Ask about timing. Some services take a day. Others take several days. Plan a ride or a rental if needed.
- Mention any damage. Point out chips, scratches, dents or repainted panels at drop-off so everyone's on the same page.
Paint protection film
- Don't wax the car before the appointment. Wax and sealants can affect how the film's adhesive bonds. The paint will be cleaned and prepped, but starting without wax helps.
- Tell the installer if parts have been repainted. Aftermarket paint can behave differently under film.
- Decide on the coverage in advance. Partial front, full front, extended or full body.
Ceramic coating
- Expect paint inspection. Most coating jobs start with checking the paint and deciding how much correction is needed.
- Plan to keep the car dry afterward. If rain is expected right after pickup, ask whether the car can stay inside a little longer.
- Ask about aftercare. How long before the first wash, and which soaps to use.
Window tint
- Know Michigan law. Film is only allowed on the top 4 inches of the windshield and front side windows. Rear windows can be any darkness with non-reflective film.
- Look at samples. Choose shade on real glass in daylight, not from a chart.
- Mention old film. If there's existing tint, removal adds time.
- Plan for curing. You'll need to keep the windows up for a few days afterward, longer in winter.
Vinyl wrap
- Choose your color in person. Colors look different on screens.
- Wash off wax and coatings. Vinyl adhesive needs bare, clean paint. Ask whether the installer handles this or wants it done beforehand.
- Check the paint. Chips and failing clear coat show through vinyl.
- Ask about door jambs and parts removal. These affect the look and the price.
In winter
- Bring the car in clean if you can. A car covered in salt and slush takes longer to prep.
- Let it warm up. Film, coatings and vinyl need warm temperatures. Cars that arrive frozen need time indoors before work starts.
- Plan the drive home. Freshly installed film and coatings don't love slush on day one.
