Start with your lease agreement
Look for the sections on:
- Modifications or alterations. Some leases restrict changes to the vehicle, or require it to be returned in its original condition.
- Excess wear and tear. This tells you what you'll be charged for at turn-in, including paint damage.
- Turn-in inspection. How and when the car is inspected.
If anything is unclear, ask the leasing company directly before wrapping. A short email now saves a surprise later.
Why wraps suit leased cars
The factory paint stays underneath. When the wrap comes off, the original color is still there.
Some protection for the paint. Vinyl shields the paint from sun and light scratches. It isn't as thick as PPF, so it won't stop rock chips the same way, but it helps.
A new look for the length of the lease. A color you might not choose for a car you own long term can be fun for three years.
Plan the removal before you wrap
If the car has to go back in its original color, the wrap has to come off before turn-in. Plan for that:
- Leave time. Don't wait until the week before the lease ends.
- Budget for removal. It's a separate job from the install.
- Expect healthy paint to come back clean. On healthy factory paint, a quality wrap applied and removed properly shouldn't damage it.
The longer a wrap stays on, and the more sun it sees, the harder it can be to remove. Quality cast vinyl from major manufacturers is made to be removable within its rated life.
Watch out for existing damage
Wraps don't hide paint problems well. Chips, scratches and dents show through the vinyl. If the car already has damage, decide whether to fix it before wrapping, since it will still be there at turn-in.
Repainted panels are also a risk. Aftermarket paint doesn't always bond as well as factory paint and can lift when the wrap is removed.
Wrap, PPF or both?
- If you want a new color: wrap.
- If you want to keep the color and avoid chip charges at turn-in: clear PPF on the front end.
- If you want a satin look plus protection: matte PPF, which also comes off before turn-in.
Partial wraps for leases
A black roof, mirror caps or chrome delete are easy to remove and change the look a lot. They're a lower cost way to personalize a leased car.
